oh yay!! my art money featured on ZNE SCENE~

Running low on cash?  If you are an artist, why not produce some art money?  You may not be able to pay your gas and electric bill with art money, but at least you'll reap the riches of creating!

You can learn more about the Art Money movement, by checking out their website, here.

The goal of artmoney is ambitious and idealistic, but speaks to the core of the creative heart:

Artmoney is original art that works as a global alternative currency. The purpose of BIAM is:

• * To offer artists worldwide the chance of financial freedom and worldwide exposure in order to focus on the creative process in the pursuit of a beautyfull world.
• * To integrate an alternative global currency with local currencies world wide as a step towards equal shopping conditions for rich and poor reguardless of the conditions of the local social environment in the persuit of a world of individual choise and personal freedom.
• * To create an art object with a pratical social application. Using art money to pay for private accomodation will bring people together in an intimate private situation. This may offer the chance for new friendships among strangers from all over the world.

This currency may as such function as a human link across cultural, racial, linguistic, political and religious barriers in the pursuit of a peacefull world.

Several ZNE Members are already having fun exploring the world of Art Money.

I took a big step....I started a group on Flickr!  I haven't ever started a group before, this is my first try at one~  I haven't officially sent out invites, but you are welcome to join in if you feel intrigued.  A few people have already found it & joined, that is encouraging!  Now to get people to actually create~

Painting found in trash could fetch $1M

NEW YORK - A painting stolen 20 years ago was found lying in trash along a street, and now it could fetch up to $1 million at auction.

Elizabeth Gibson didn't know anything about the brightly colored abstract work she spotted on her morning walk four years ago on Manhattan's Upper West Side. Sotheby's auction house will be selling the work next month for the now-widowed original owner.

"I would say it was an appointment with destiny," Gibson said in a telephone interview Tuesday. "I just knew it meant something. ... It was extremely powerful, and even though I didn't understand it. I knew it had power."

It turned out that it was a 1970 painting titled "Tres Personajes" (Three People) by Mexican artist Rufino Tamayo, whose work has soared in value in recent years.

A Houston couple whose names were not disclosed purchased the work — an oil on canvas with marble dust and sand worked into the paint — in 1977 at Sotheby's. It was stolen in 1987 from a warehouse where they had placed it while moving.

The couple reported the theft to Houston and federal authorities. Information on the missing painting also was posted on the databases of the International Foundation for Art Research and the Art Loss Register. But no credible leads had turned up.

August Uribe, Sotheby's senior vice president of Impressionist and modern art, said in an interview Tuesday that the husband paid $55,000 for it as a gift for his wife. He has since died and she is putting it up for sale.

Sotheby's said it could bring up to $1 million when it is sold at its Latin American Art auction on Nov. 20. Gibson will receive the $15,000 reward the couple put up when it was stolen, plus an undisclosed percentage of the sale of the painting.

Gibson said she learned of the work's worth when her research led her to the Web site of "Antiques Roadshow FYI," a companion program to the PBS show "Antiques Roadshow."

Uribe had featured the painting on "Antiques Roadshow FYI's" Missing Materpieces segment.

Sotheby's says "Tres Personajes" is an important work that represents the artist's mature period.

Tamayo was born in 1899 in the Mexican state of Oaxaca and studied at Mexico's School of Fine Arts. His early work had similarities to that of famous Mexican muralists such as Diego Rivera. His later style is more individual, featuring the vivid colors and expressions of Oaxaca and the influence of pre-Columbian art.

By the time he died in 1991, Tamayo was famous worldwide with numerous prizes to his credit and exhibitions in the United States, South America, Europe and Russia.

A Tamayo retrospective starts Friday at the Museo Tamayo Arte Contemporaneo in Mexico City.

Willem Van de Velde Painting

Alan Fausel, head of the paintings department at Doyle New York, tells a tale of mystery, theft, and disguise — except that unfortunately, this tale is very true. On Christmas Eve 1978, thieves broke in to the MH de Young Museum in San Francisco through the skylight and made off with four paintings. The paintings vanished for 21 years, until November of 1999, when three of them turned up in a New York auction house where Mr. Fausel worked. The gallery held a walk-in day where, much like the ROADSHOW, the public could bring in their art to be appraised by experts. When a mysterious stranger came into the gallery and asked for help, one of the crew noticed that he was wearing a disguise — a wig and a hat. After the event was over, the stranger called from a local phone booth to let the crew know he had dropped off a box. Having no idea what the box contained (trash, treasure, a bomb?) they opened it and found three of the four stolen de Young Museum paintings. One of them, a Rembrandt called "Portrait of a Rabbi," was probably not saleable since it was too high-profile and would be easily recognized. The other two paintings were by less well-known artists and in poorer condition. As for the remaining missing piece, a painting by Willem Van de Velde the younger called "Harbor Scene," Fausel says it is worth at least $200,000. This piece was the most commercially viable of the four, since Van de Velde did a lot of similar nautical scenes and this one could probably pass in the market without being noticed easily. If the missing painting is ever brought to public auction, and a good auction house refers to the painting's history, the painting will likely be recognized as belonging in the MH de Young Museum. Until that day, Fausel says, the search goes on.

14. What is your favorite cuss word?  I personally despise cussing, although back in the day I occasionally swore, but not anymore...little ears are listening in my house ;)

15. One night you wake up because you heard a noise.  You turn on the light to see you are surrounded by mummies, what do you do?  Get my video recorder, then call The History Channel!

16.  Your house is on fire what do you do?  Save my kids... grab my purse, photographs, art & throw our clothes out the window, would I have time for all that?! ;)

17.  The angel of death has descended upon you.  Fortunately the angel is pretty cool and in a good mood, you are offered one half hour you whatever you want before you bite it. Whatcha going to do in that half hour?  I would spend my time hugging my family & friends~

19. You can relive any point of time in your life, for only half an hour, what would you choose to experience again?  Holding my new born babies, seconds after they were born~

But check this out... you can move to anywhere place in the world, where would you choose?  oh my so many choices...I would say someplace in Europe, Italy, Switzerland, Greece?!

If you were banned from every bar in the world except one, which one would it be?   I really could care less if I were banned from bars, because remember, I am so boring...I dont hang out at bars  ;)  but in my pre children dayz, I was know to frequent Cafe Avante every Saturday night, Gosh I loved to dance!!

23. Hopefully you didn't  mention this in your super powers question....if you did then we will just expound on that.  Suddenly you  have gained the ability to fly!  Whose house are you going to fly to first & explain "Check it out I can fly!     That's my little secret! ;)
